Inspirational 101: Mira Murati, the new leader of OpenAI after Sam Altman left, went from being an engineer to an interim CEO

In the past, Mira Murati was a senior product manager at Tesla and was instrumental in the creation of the Model X, the company’s flagship electric vehicle.

Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer (CTO), is expected to assume the position of acting CEO in the interim following the well-publicized departure of Sam Altman.

The board of OpenAI, an AI research company, fired Sam Altman in an unexpected move, citing that he was “not consistently candid in his communications with the board, which hampered the ability to exercise the responsibilities.”

With the introduction of the ground-breaking chatbot ChatGPT last November, which was enabled by the previously unheard-of Large Language Model (LLM) GPT, Sam Altman rose to fame on a global scale. Since then, the field of artificial intelligence has completely changed, ushering in a new era in the field.

Mira Murati: Who is she?

Personal Details:

Murati was born to Albanian parents in Vlorë, Albania, in 1988. She moved to Vancouver Island, Canada, when she was 16 years old to attend Pearson College UWC, the United World College, from which she earned an International Baccalaureate diploma in 2007.

Academic Life:

Murati received a Davis-UWC Scholarship to attend Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for her undergraduate studies. There, she was accepted into the school’s five-year engineering dual degree program with Dartmouth College.

She got a Bachelor of Arts from Colby and a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth in 2012.

Career Life:

In 2011, Murati set up her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs. From 2012 to 2013, she held a job at Zodiac Aerospace. Before joining Leap Motion, she worked as a senior product manager for the Model X for three years at Tesla.

She then started working with OpenAI in 2018.  At OpenAI, Mira Murati was instrumental in the creation of ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex, three cutting-edge AI systems. Her role as a driving force behind innovations that produce natural and coherent text based on web data was cemented by her leadership in these projects.

A year later, in 2022, Mira took on the responsibilities for ChatGPT distribution. Her promotion to interim CEO signified a major turning point in OpenAI’s history. She highlighted the value of ethical advancement of artificial intelligence in a memo: “This is welcome progress and an opportunity to participate in a future where AI is built and used for good.”

After Sam Altman was abruptly removed from his position as CEO of OpenAI on November 17, 2023, Mera Murati took the role.

She is a proponent of artificial intelligence regulation, contending that more should be done by governments “to align on some basic safety requirements for the execution of these models.”
